If your home was built or renovated between 1995 and 2007, there’s a higher chance you have it. That’s when Kitec was most commonly installed in California. If you’re not sure, we can come out and confirm it for you during a quick inspection.
No, and here’s why: the fittings that connect Kitec pipes aren’t manufactured anymore. Even if we wanted to patch a section, we can’t get the parts.
On top of that, Kitec pipes are a non-standard size. You can’t use regular plumbing fittings to connect them to anything else. So even a “repair” would require custom workarounds that won’t last and won’t be up to code.
The bigger issue is that if one section failed, the rest of your system is right behind it. Kitec fails because of a process called dezincification, where the zinc in the brass fittings corrodes away. That’s happening throughout your entire system, not just where the leak showed up. Replacing one section just buys you a few months before the next one goes.
It depends on the size of your home and how accessible the pipes are. Smaller homes with easy access might run a few thousand dollars. Larger homes or places where the pipes are buried in walls and floors can cost significantly more.
